Year 2 Home Learning

Homework is given to reinforce concepts already covered in class. In Year 2 children receive a homework pack on a Tuesday. They need to complete their homework by the following Monday. The pack consists of 10 spelling words with a dictation sentence, a handwriting sheet, Literacy sheets and also Numeracy sheets. Spelling words are tested on a Monday and pupils should be revising their Big Maths Learn Its on a daily basis in order to prepare them for the weekly test on Friday.

All homework given is explained to the children and the aim is that it strengthens any areas taught in class. The idea is that children complete one worksheet a night which should take no longer than 20 minutes to finish. Spellings should be practiced on a daily basis. If you find that your child takes much longer than expected, please speak to the class teacher for advice.

In Year Two, it is expected that the children begin to have a set routine for when completing their homework. It is best if the children work in a quiet environment away from distractions such as the television or younger siblings. Homework should be completed under the guidance of a parent but parents should resist the temptation of doing their child’s work for them!

As well as the written homework, children also have daily reading. Once your child has read to you, make sure that you spend at least 5 minutes discussing the book and asking them questions about what they have read. Some suggested questions might be asking them; what they liked about the book? Who their favourite character was? Why did a certain character do a specific thing?
