University support SS

University support and guidance is provided for students in our 6th Form and is an important part of 6th form life at The Senior School.

Year 11s are advised before they make their A level choices of the subjects they need for their chosen career paths, this will include advice about facilitating subjects (those subjects favoured by Russell Group Universities), mandatory requirements for certain degree courses and other more specific information relating to students’ individual needs. Year 12s who plan to go to University have guidance sessions with the Head of Sixth form to consider choices of higher education courses and institutions, employability skills and the use of relevant resources to help inform their decisions. Central to providing guidance and direction is the mentoring system and individual action planning. Students are encouraged to consider possible future career paths, researching requirements in terms of qualifications, skills and experience.

Activity in the Sixth Form is dominated by the university application process via UCAS. A UCAS information day is held immediately after the AS exams for students and parents. Assistance is given regarding online UCAS applications, with part of the focus being on how to complete the personal statement.

Oxbridge candidates are given additional specific guidance. This includes information various aptitude tests as well as support and coaching for interviews. Students are encouraged to apply to leading universities in the UK, including those in the prestigious Russell Group and we are very proud of the final university destinations of all our students.

Many Higher Education Institutions now have their own application procedures and entrance tests. Additionally, all potential doctors, dentists, vets, and lawyers undergo an aptitude test: (UKCAT/ BMAT /LNAT). Students are advised of these requirements and directed to the relevant external facilitators.

Support  and guidance is also available to students interested in US-based colleges and universities as well as other European and international destinations.
