The aim for English in the New National Curriculum is to promote high standards of literacy by equipping pupils with a strong command of the written and spoken word and to develop their love of literature through widespread reading for enjoyment.
The programmes of study for English in the New National Primary Framework are grouped into the following key areas: spoken language; reading (word reading & comprehension); writing (composition & handwriting); grammar; spelling; vocabulary & glossary. These areas are taught in discrete lessons and reinforced through cross-curricular links.
