The Junior School Pupil Support

A well designed and taught lesson doesn’t guarantee that all children will make progress. We have to be very careful that each child in The Junior School is treated as an individual, whose specific needs are met.

The most routine form of pupil support comes from the class teacher, who builds a relationship with each child in the class that is positive and supportive. However many children, as some point in their school life, will need additional support. This may be for many reasons and take many different forms.

Traditionally there has been stigma attached to a child who needs additional support; it’s useful to know that 20%, that’s one in five, children will need some sort of additional help at one time or another during their school career; it may be due to a difficulty with a new skill or concept, emotional issues somewhere else in the child’s life, a physical issue such as illness or a sensory impairment, or many other reasons.

If you have any concerns about the progress your child is making, or his or her emotional or physical well being, please let the class teacher know.

The Senior School Student Support

The Senior School places great emphasis on the welfare of its students. There is a designated pastoral team who support each individual student throughout his or her time in the School. They monitor each child’s progress and provide support when necessary to meet any additional needs.

All students are placed in a form group under the care and guidance of a Form Tutor whose role it is to monitor attendance, punctuality, well being and behaviour and who are parents’ first line of contact in the case of issues and concerns.

When they first enter the School students are under the overall care and supervision of the Head of Year 7. Thereafter, in Year 8 and 9, they become the responsibility of the Head of Key Stage 3 and in Year 10 and 11 the Head of Key Stage 4 monitors and supports their progress towards I/GCSEs. In Key Stage 5 the Head of Sixth Form guides them through the rigours of ‘A’ Level study and prepares them for entry into University and the challenges of adult life.

We recognize that some students may have additional needs. The School has an Inclusion Manager who leads staff in ensuring that, together, we provide the right kind of support to enable all students to achieve to their full potential.

Students with English as an Additional Language are also given extra support in the form of Booster lessons and specialist language teaching to bring them up to the level of proficiency in English required by the National Curriculum.

We believe in fostering a sense of responsibility in our young people and to that end we encourage them to take part in the Student Council and to become involved in the Peer Mentoring programme. Sixth Form students also support Year 7 children as part of our Induction process.

In all our endeavours to support our students we understand it is vital to work closely in partnership with parents and we encourage our staff to keep a regular dialogue open between School and home.
