The Fine Art Department

The Department of Fine Art has rapidly grown and developed over the last few years. We are very proud of our achievements, in particular our outstanding GCSE and GCE results. Over the last four years our students have received the highest GCSE achievement award internationally. Every year we showcase our students work, the exhibition consists of paintings and preparatory work by GCSE and GCE level students. We also in the past collaborated with the drama and music department and the evening was enjoyed by parents, staff and friends, as well as our external moderator.

Over the years we have also taken part in various art competitions, which include The Nicosia Water board competition as well as the Nicosia Dog Shelter. Our students won various awards including a scholarship in graphic design at the Cyprus University.

Further down the school at KS3 we offer an after school art club, where students can further develop their art skills.

Drama Department

The Drama Department often begins the Academic Year with the AS and A2 trip to London which is a requirement for both A level Specifications. The students experience the rich and rewarding environment of London’s theatre scene, seeing four Live Theatre Performances of top London plays; and visiting venues such as Tate Modern, the V&A, The National and Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre to participate in practical, drama-based workshops and activities.

Drama club begins at the start of the Autumn Term. Rehearsals for the School production are on a weekly basis and usually the production is performed near the end of the second term. Our first production was ‘The Witches’ by Roald Dahl; this year we have just had a great success with a student-devised musical version of ‘The Little Prince’. Productions are memorable experiences for all those who participate: we collaborate with the Art and Music departments to create a production which includes pupils of all ages.

We find that in Drama lessons – especially at KS3 and during the first year of GCSE many social issues are explored that are often part of PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education) programme. Exploring through Drama is a proven, non-threatening means by which some sensitive topics can be highlighted. During the Spring Term we have the GCSE and A ‘level classes preparing for their practical examination to which we invite selected audiences on the evenings of the exams.

Throughout the year we encourage our students to attend English Speaking Theatre whenever available on the island.

Music Department

In order to support the central work carried out in the classroom, the Music Department encourages all students to be actively involved in some or all of the various extra-curricular activities and events that take place during each year.

At the heart of this are the orchestra and choir. Both of these ensembles prepare throughout the year for a variety of concerts, the main one being the Christmas Concert which takes place at PASYDY. We also take part in Musica Live – a weekend festival where we join with student from other schools for intense preparation for a concert which takes place at Strovolos Municipal Theatre.

In addition to ensemble music making, we encourage all students to perform individually or as part of a small group in the Junior & Senior Han Solo Concerts. These concerts which have a formal yet relaxed atmosphere which take place at the end of the 2nd or beginning of the 3rd term in the school hall.

A hugely popular event is the annual talent show takes place in the first term and showcases aspects of instrumental and vocal music, dance and drama.

As part of the Faculty of Arts we support the School Production through both live music and sound design. We also support some of the PTA events by providing live or recorded music.
