Course: Art & Design: Fine Art
Qualification: GCSE
Exam Board: EDEXCEL
Fine Art may be defined as work which is produced as an outcome of an individual’s personal experiences.
Work produced for the GCSE Art & Design FA qualification will demonstrate the use of formal elements and creative skills, and give form to individual thoughts, feelings, observations and ideas.
In the context of this specification, disciplines will include painting and drawing, printmaking, sculpture and alternative media.
A GCSE qualification in Art and Design encourages students to:
The Edexcel GCSE in Art and Design Fine Art comprises of two units:
Content: The themes for the personal portfolio are selected and developed by the center. The work will be produced under controlled conditions.
Assessment: It is internally set and marked, and externally moderated.
This unit is weighted at 60% of the qualification.
The work should address all four Assessment Objectives, with a maximum of 20 marks for each Assessment Objective.
Content: The externally set assignment (ESA) consists of one externally set, broad thematic starting point. The ESA is available during January of each year. A preparatory period of study will lead to the 10 hour timed set task.
Assessment: It is externally set, internally marked and externally moderated.
This unit is weighted at 40% of the qualification.
The work should address all four Assessment Objectives, with a maximum of 20 marks for each Assessment Objective.
AO1: develop ideas through investigations informed by contextual and other sources, demonstrating analytical and cultural understanding.
AO2: refine their ideas through experimenting and selecting appropriate resources, media, materials techniques and processes.
AO3: record ideas, observations and insights relevant to the intentions in visual and/or other forms.
AO4: present a personal, informed and meaningful response demonstrating analytical and critical understanding, realizing intentions and, where appropriate, making connections between visual, written, oral or other elements.
Where written evidence is presented alongside practical work, the two will be assessed in an integrated way, taking into account the descriptors that apply to the more practical aspects of the course and students’ ability to:
Component 1 (Personal Investigation)
A period of study into the elements of drawing including mark making, line, tone and colour. Pupils use this first part of the year to build up their skills and knowledge of fine Art.
Other forms, appropriate to intentions.
AO2 Analyse and evaluate critically sources such as images, objects, artefacts and texts, showing understanding of purposes, meanings and contexts
AO3 Develop ideas through sustained investigations and exploration, selecting and using materials, processes and resources, identifying and interpreting relationships and
AO4 Present a personal, coherent and informed response, realising intentions, and articulating and explaining connections with the work of others.
Spring Term (8-10 weeks)
Pupils will be researching into their chosen idea collecting first hand visual references. They will then explore various materials that they experimented with during the first term to use, such as pencil, charcoal, pastels and paint.
Subsequently pupils will also begin to research into the works of other artists in order to develop their own style and technique. This will be done as a group exercise and also on an individual basis.
Pupils will then begin to develop ideas choosing materials and methods best suited to their intentions, whilst working towards a final outcome.
Pupils will then explore a more focused range of materials and techniques based on knowledge gained during the year. Assessment criteria will again be based on the above assessment objectives.
A fifteen hour timed mock exam will follow the preparatory period during which students will produce their final piece(s).
A summer vacation research project developing their strengths and current interests.
Autumn Term (second year of A level 18- 20 weeks)
Component 1 is continued.
Based on their summer vacation project pupils link their chosen thematic proposal to their personal study. Pupils will learn to discuss review and evaluate both their practical work and personal study. Component 1 will be finalised with the development of ideas and the personal, illustrated study (1-3000 words).
The externally set assignment will be discussed and appropriate starting points chosen. Ideas will then be generated and developed into final outcomes for the unaided final exam. This component will demonstrate their understanding of the assessment objectives. Pupils will be involved in presentation of their work for final assessment.
Pupils are expected to complete homework which will be set at various stages of the projects in accordance to their homework timetable, as well as finishing any incomplete class work.
As a basis to developing an understanding and vocabulary appropriate to the AS course, they should also take an interest in exhibitions and art events in order to increase their background knowledge of the subject, which will enable them to develop their work appropriately.
Pupils will be following a given theme (i.e. ‘diversity’) and exploring a wide range of materials and techniques.
The Assessment Objectives are:
