Caring for Our Planet Starts Young!

Our Year 1 children have just completed their fascinating topic about Habitats, focusing on the beach and ocean environments. To conclude their learning, they took part in a meaningful excursion to MacKenzie Beach, where, under the guidance of the AKTI Project and Research Centre (NGO)—they worked together to collect 30kg of rubbish! We are incredibly proud of their teamwork, enthusiasm, and sense of responsibility towards protecting their island.

The children also had the amazing opportunity to welcome marine biologist Andonis Petrou to their assembly, where they learned all about the fascinating creatures and corals that live beneath the waves and how we can help protect their habitats. They touched natural sponges and learned about seahorses, seals, turtles and dolphins. Thank you to Mr Andonis Petrou for his presentation and to Akti for another wonderful collaboration.

Throughout this topic we were able to take learning outside. The children built habitats for imaginary creatures and made turtles in our forest garden. We also incorporated this topic into our Literacy, Art and Computing lessons where the children created fact files about turtles and beautiful art work.

This topic has inspired our young learners to think and care deeply about the environment we live in — a small step that makes a big difference!
